EP Premiere: Another Hospital "Proof Of Context"

Following their 2019 debut LP Oh Lord, Oh Brother, Oh Baby, which was the first release to feature the five piece line-up of Eric Kohlenstein (guitar/vocals), Dylan Gray (guitar), Julia McIntyre (guitar/vocals/glockenspiel), Evan Ballew (bass) and Jamie Conroy (drums), Another Hospital had plans to begin recording their next release immediately after returning from a short East Coast tour. Those plans never materialized as day jobs and creative burnout began to eat away at the months. From this Groundhog day-esque repetition came the spark for the songs that would become the Proof of Context EP. Accompanying the EP is a visualizer, crafted by a team of Gray, Ballew and Conroy. The feeling of being caught in a loop, both interpersonally and chronologically, is the central theme of the EP, and is represented in the visualizer through imagery of traffic and nature, but much like the process of making the EP itself, that mundanity is subverted by turning it into a performance, in this case the act of screening and reshooting the footage through an old TV.

Proof Of Context is a well-written EP sure to send the listener on a journey. Much like it’s accompanying visualizer, you’re sure to fall into a trance stuck somewhere between space and time. Check out the visualizer below, and follow Another Hospital on social media.

1) What was the writing process for the EP like?
The early writing of this EP took place in July, 2019. We were going from recording drum and bass parts during the day to getting our asses kicked in an intramural volleyball league at night (none of us knew how to play but we tried). We were quite productive during those initial session. It felt like we had the whole studio to ourselves. Then between Eric going to Australia and the pandemic, the EP just kinda sat in storage for a while. We adjusted to contributing parts remotely nicely and finished up the rest of the EP in the box. - Evan

2) Would you say you were more/less creative during quarantine?
-
I was definitely less creative during quarantine. I spent most of it very overwhelmed at the world, and music kind of fell by the wayside. - Julia
- I would say quarantine made me creative in different ways. Live shows have always been my favorite part of music so I got to try some things I wouldn’t have otherwise. - Dylan
- Quarantine was the first time in a long time I hadn’t been active with a band, either playing shows or working on a release, since I recorded almost all of my parts for this in summer 2019. It’s been an adjustment trying to be creative for nobody but myself, but it’s been a rewarding experience to try new ideas out and new art forms that I wouldn’t be comfortable sharing with others yet. - Jamie

3) What are some things you’re looking forward to again after the pandemic subsides?
-
After this is all over, I’m looking forward to getting back to live entertainment in all forms - I can’t wait to see a theatre performance, a concert, or go to a museum without being worried about it. - Julia
- I deal pretty well with being shut in, and honestly will probably still not get out that much, but there was a lot of people I only ever saw at shows and parties who I’m really looking forward to catching up with. I’m not very good at maintaining friendships over the internet. - Jamie

4) If you can go on a Dream Tour with any 2 artists and open for them, who would it be?
Tashi Dorji & Merzbow -Eric
Radiohead & Bloc Party -Julia
Godcaster & Spirit of The Beehive -Evan
Elephant Jake & Dogleg -Dylan
Glass Beach & Cheekface -Jamie
